The Ombudsman Office of Vanuatu entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU)on the 19th of March 2021.
The purpose of the MoU between these two independent bodies is to enhance and strengthen the working relationship between these two institutions in the field of Financial Intelligence and alleged breaches of Law, particularly the Leadership Code Act.
According to the Ombudsman Mr Hamlison Bulu, both institutions have a duty and function to ensure law is always complied with and good governance is always practiced and with the signing of this MOU both institution will ensure that duty is performed at a much higher standard.
Director Floyd Mera, head of the Financial Intelligence Unit stressed that FIU and the Ombudsman Office had been working in collaboration with each other since 2014 however there was no formal agreement in place to properly manage the roles and relationship between these two institutions and expects that with this MOU, both institutions will be able to carry out their functions efficiently.
